Every year towards the end of the year we have been sending a big delegation since long either with the PM or with the FM for participation in the annual special session of the United Nations’ general assembly. It is understood that in line with this old practice when the Foreign Office a few days back submitted a summary seeking permission of the PM to send a 40- member big delegation to New York, the PM very rightly objected over the size of the delegation. Insiders say the PM ordered that only three senior most officials of the Foreign Office should accompany the FM. The common man of this country expects such brave decisions from his PM.
Everybody knows that in the past, the former PMs or presidents have been including their blue-eyed boys in such delegations from every walk of life and these hangers on enjoyed these joyrides at the expense of poor taxpayer’s money. Their presence or absence from such foreign jaunts didn’t matter at all as they did nothing on these state-sponsored trips except sight-seeing or shopping, besides, enjoying ambrosial food during these sojourns.
Time was when in the near past the National Assembly suffered from lack of quorum . There was a a PM, who in order to entice them to become punctual in attending NA, made a ridiculous suggestion to the members of the NA that the names of those of them who would regularly attend sessions of the NA would be included in the delegations that go abroad with the PM and the president. This shows the way how public money was squandered.
Let us hope the PM would continue to make similar decisions in every field of life.
