Wall Street Journal has stunned the Sharif family by its sensational disclosure that the ruling Sharifs had been adequately bribed to facilitate the sale of K-Electric. According to the WSJ story the Sharif brothers had enhanced their riches by $ 20 million for their ‘nod’ in the sale deed.
Sharifs have the option of dragging the WSJ into the courts and claiming the damages worth a lot more. That is if they have ample evidence to nullify the WSJ charges. This is unlikely. A newspaper of the stature of the Wall Street Journal is unlikely to publish such a shocking story without substantial evidence under its belt. The newspaper may be in the possession of a ‘smoking gun’ with Sharif’s finger prints on it.
The second best option for the Sharifs is to demand the formation of a Parliamentary committee to probe into the WSJ allegations. Meaning thereby, issuance of summons to the WSJ editors to appear before Syed Khurshid Shah, Khawaja Asif, Chaudhry Ahsan Iqbal, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Saad Rafique to explain their anti-democracy conduct. If that happens Syed Khurshid Shah is likely to deliver speech number two to establish that Parliament is so supreme that it can allow a parliamentarian to get away with murder.
Whether or not the WSJ management finds the idea decent to ask corruption to sit in judgment to try itself, is any body’s guess.
Meanwhile Shahbaz Sharif is reported to have emailed to the WSJ editor: YOU TOO BRUTUS!
