At long last Zardari has succeeded in clipping the wings of the Rangers. The new resolution passed by the Sind provincial assembly not only curtails their power but also doesn’t speak of giving them permission to extend their operation to the Rural Sind where many terrorists have fled from Karachi in order to escape their arrest. There is no gainsaying the fact that the use of black money plays a pre-dominant part in terrorism and if the Rangers cannot lay their hands directly on the persons who bankroll terrorism through the use of this money, the desired results will never be achieved. This new resolution of the Sind provincial assembly is certainly a big setback to the efforts of the Rangers to bring back normalcy to the troubled Karachi. After the passage of this new resolution the role of the Rangers has been restricted to assisting only the police and no other investigating agency like the FIA or the NAB would be able to draw on their support. This bar laid down in the resolution amounts to putting a premium on corruption because local police is highly politicised and always dance to the tune of its political masters in power in Sind, therefore,it simply cannot tread in the areas forbidden by them.
If the prime minister maintains a silence over this resolution it would certainly amount to criminal silence and the man in the street, in that case, would be justified to draw the conclusion that deep down he is in league with Zardari and wants to protect those who have been looting the exchequer of this country. His silence is likely to be taken ill by the armed forces also who have hitherto been doing a very good job in cleaning the Augean stables of Karachi. The new resolution of Sind Provincial Assembly also makes it compulsory on the Rangers to obtain prior permission of the chief minister Sind before arresting important political personalities involved in crimes. It means that the so-called elite involved in corruption would never be arrested as CM being himself a political animal would never allow that to happen.Granted that human rights are very sacred but there comes a time in the life of a nation when in the supreme interest of the state these rights are suspended for a fixed time.Which other country in the world cares more for the human rights than the US?Didn’t it pass many laws after nine-eleven usurping human rights in its bid to get rid of terrorism from its mainland?
