It is an open secret that the American CIA has been overthrowing those foreign governments which did not see eye to eye with the American policies in a variety of ways, some of which are subtle and some are not subtle. Let us today have a cursory glance over these methods. The first method that it uses is funding the Opposition of the government it intends to dislodge. It is the safest and the easiest way to achieve its aim . Under this method money is distributed for buying the opposition. The complicated way is to get the government toppled through a military coup. An example of it was the overthrow of elected government of South Vietnam in 1983 by the CIA at the hands of generals. Likewise, the governments of Brazil and Guetemmala were also dislodged in the same manner.
The CIA also indulges in assassination of the popular leaders like the murder of Congolese popular leader Patrice Lumamba in 1961. But since he was very popular it could not install the leaders it wanted to put in the saddle in his place and there was utter chaos in Congo for four years. The third method which it uses to get rid of any government is to destroy its economy through overt and covert ways by imposing economic sanctions and embargos on the country like it did in Chile in 1970 because it wanted to remove from power Salvador Allende who had started a policy of nationalising major industries of the country much to the annoyance of Washington. The result was a military coup that brought General Pinochet into power in 1974
The fourth known method is the take over of media like TV, radio and newspapers and then use them for changing the public opinion against the government it wants to target. The CIA believes that it is much easier to buy a news reporter than a newspaper. In the mid 20th century the CIA adopted this method in Italy with a telling effect. The fifth notorious method is creating chaos in the country of its target as it did in Iran in 1953 against the government of Dr Mosaddaq whose fault was that he had nationalised all the British oil companies which was not liked by the West , particularly, by the US. This method is used in such a subtle way that even the protesters who take to the streets don’t know why they are protesting.
These five methods are quite known and notorious. Who knows there might be some other ways also which we don’t know.
