Isn’t it about time we said good bye to Washington? In the 1950s we played the role of a front state for the US in its Cold War against the Soviet union’s communist philosophy at the behest of the US thus incurring the wrath of Moscow just for nothing. When we were in trouble in 1971 Indo-Pak war and both Moscow and New Delhi were bent upon dismembering Pakistan the Americans looked the other way and its 7 th fleet didn’t show up to let us off the hook thus resulting in the break up of this country.Once bitten twice shy, that episode should have opened our eyes but it didn’t.Twice did we fall into America’s trap again once during Zia’s stint and again during Musharraf’s era when we again committed ourselves in the America’s wars in Afghanistan thus putting at stake our very survival .
What have we got in return? The US doesn’t appreciate our sacrifices made for its cause.Bacha Khan had very correctly advised Zia-ul-Haq not to entangle Pakistan in Afghanistan at the instance of Washington as the Americans want to avenge their defeat at the hands of communists in Vietnam by pushing the Soviets out of Afghanistan by using us at their pawns..His advice fell on deaf ears.
Enough is enough. We had now better concentrate fully on cementing our ties with the two superpowers who happen to be our next door neighbours. It is of utmost importance that we take effective diplomatic steps in removing any misunderstanding that Moscow might have about our past conduct. Likewise, relations with Beijing should be further strengthened. For achieving these objective we should send our best diplomats in our embassies in Moscow and Beijing.
