PARIS (AFP) – The fate of Russian athletes accused of doping now lies solely with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in place of the suspended All-Russian Athletic Federation (ARAF), the international sports body announced Saturday.
The cases concerned include Russian racewalkers Vera Sokolova, Elmira Alembekova, Ivan Noskov, Mikhail Ryzhov and Denis Strelkov, who all tested positive for blood boosting endurance enhancer EPO in June 2015.
CAS said that they and the athletes had agreed CAS would handle their hearings in the absence of the Russian authority, in accordance with world anti doping body WADA s doping code and world athletics governing body IAAF s rules.
The court said it would render a decision for each athlete within a reasonable timeframe.CAS will also handle the case of middle distance runner Ekaterina Sharmina. She has been charged with “use or attempted use by an athlete of a prohibited substance or prohibited method” by the IAAF following analysis of her Biological Passport.
A further appeal before a different CAS Panel will be possible in her case.
Anti-doping accusations involving middle distance runner Kristina Ugarova and heptathlete Tatyana Chernova have also been referred to CAS.
Six appeals filed at CAS by the IAAF in 2015 against ARAF and Sergey Kirdyapkin, Sergey Bakulin, Olga Kaniskina, Valeriy Borchin and Vladimir Kanaikin are close to conclusion, the sports body said.
