It is a pity that powers that be in this country have not been giving that much attention to radio Pakistan which it duly deserves. All emphasis seems to have shifted to television since its inception in 1964 in the country. It is interesting to point out that even after the advent of BBC Television there has been no decrease in the public popularity of the BBC Radio which continues to play a prominent role in the British media. One of its daily broadcast billed as TODAY is the most liked programme of the Brits and it is broadcast from BBC radio and not from BBC TV.
In India too radio’s importance hasn’t diminished in any respect after the introduction of television.
Why step-motherly treatment is being meted out to radio in this country is not understandable. The day the bureaucrats started manning key positions in radio Pakistan instead of professionals like Z.A. Bokhari, Agha Nasir and Salim Gilani, to mention a few,the downfall of radio started.
The outreach of radio is tremendous and its listeners in the country are much more than the viewers of TV. In today’ political and social scenario it is extremely essential that its external service is re-organised on a massive scale and broadcasts in different languages like Pushto, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Chinese, Russian and all languages spoken in the central Asian countries are beamed with strong relaying transmitters in order to effectively counteract the vicious and venomous propaganda of countries hostile to Pakistan. In the same manner, there is a dire need to use this medium effectively for creating social awareness among the masses against the various social evils that afflict our society.
