The Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan deserves hosannas for his recent drastic steps aimed at the amelioration of the lot of the aged and needy population of his country. He has ordered that henceforth every Turk over the age of 65 would be getting free health cover, free house and a monthly stipend equivalent to 300 US dollars per month. He will also be sent on Hajj once gratis. All that one needs in the autumn of one’s life is Medicare, a roof over his head and sufficient money in pocket to keep his body and soul together. There are over Fifty Muslim countries in the world. How many rulers out of these countries think in terms of what the Turkish president has been thinking?Cannot the Sheikhs of Emirates , the princes of Saudi Arabia , the Sultan of Brunei and their likes , who are never tired of buying prime land in Britain , New York and Spain pool their unlimited resources and help assist financially their down-trodden Muslim brethren living in the poor Muslim countries?
The basic spirit behind the Hajj pilgrimage every year is that Muslims of the world should get to know also the issues and problems of Muslims living in other countries as Hajj provides them with an opportunity to assemble at one place for a congregation and then chalk out a strategy under which the rich should come to the monetary assistance of their poor brothers living in other countries. Are we following this spirit?
We talk of Zakat but we don’t pay it. Even if we pay we don’t pay it on our actual income. We don’t follow its spirit. We just go through the motions. A reliable research has revealed that if the Muslims start paying zakat on their actual income there would be no poor left in their country.
