The prime minister took his time to select the new governor of the KPK after Sardar Mehtab Abbasi called it a day.A number of persons were aspiring for this job.It is good that better person out of the probable candidates for the gubernatorial job in the KPK has been picked up.Iqbal Jhagra is a cool -headed politician who doesn’t rush things and person of such a temperament is ideally suited for dealing with the volatile and trigger-happy population of the FATA.
The new governor’s hands would, however, be full.He had to first of all set his house in order by selecting the cream out of the civil servants as political agents for the seven tribal agencies which he is supposed to govern. The basic qualification of a political agent is that he should be a man of impeccable financial integrity with all the good qualities of head and heart. He should be a man of strong nerves and he must have successfully worked as a Assistant political agent in the tribal area for at least two years. An officer who hasn’t worked in the lower echelon in FATA should never ever be posted as PA in the tribal belt no matter if his name is recommended by any parliamentarian or even the prime minister or the president.
The rehabilitation of the IDPs in the FATA should be his another priority. A massive amount is being spent on their rehabilitation, therefore,an eagle eye should be kept on the quality of construction work in order to ensure that the taxpayer’s money doesn’t go in the private coffers of officials of the nation building departments and builders.
There will be a dire need of keeping the intelligence officers in the tribal belt on their toes so that anti-state element does not raise its ugly head again in the FATA.We cannot afford caught napping again.Every evil needs to be nipped in the bud.A stitch in time saves nine.
Granted that reforms are needed in the administrative system of FATA but whatever reforms are undertaken should be carried out after taking into confidence all the essential stake holders and that too incrementally, step by step, keeping in view the unique geographical terrain of the area.
