Thugs of the sub-continent

Aamir Khan recently screened a film under the title ‘Thugs of Hindustan ‘whose idea was taken from an old novel written about two thugs of Hindustan who cheated and looted people for good 15 years between 1790 and 1805. These two thugs pale in comparison with the thugs of today both in India and Pakistan most of whom have been roaming in the corridors of powers since long. It is very much difficult for the under-equipped and ill-trained police and other crime investigating agencies of the state in the sub-continent to nab them because of the highly sophisticated way in which the white collar crime is committed these days. This is the precise reason why these thugs don’t get their just deserts. Though some of the thugs referred to above have gone behind the bars and some would follow suit but at the end nothing would happen to them. At the end of the day they would be let off the hook sooner or later—-thanks to the legal nitpicking and hairsplitting. It also seems well nigh impossible to get hold of their bank accounts and property in the foreign countries due to a lot of legal formalities involved in the process. The cronies of these thugs are going to make life difficult for the present rulers in Islamabad by following agitational politics both inside and outside parliament .
It has been noted that the law of this land is heavily weighed in favour of the accused. The jurisprudence which our courts follow says there is no harm if nine out of ten accused escape punishment but one innocent should never be hanged. Small wonder a large number of accused get the benefit of the doubt and get away with lightly.
