Conscientious elements are concerned over the maltreatment of the minorities in India, and they believe that under Modi India is on the path to perdition and complete ruin. On Friday, renowned versatile actor Naseeruddin Shah in a video released by Amnesty India said: “Walls of hatred are being erected in the name of religion in India. Innocent people are being killed; the country is awash with horrid hatred and brutality. Artists, actors, scholars and poets are being stifled; journalists are being silenced.” Controversy had started when he took exception to mob violence in Utter Pradesh’s Bulandshahr on 3rd December over alleged cow slaughter in which two men were killed. Naseeruddin Shah has won numerous awards in his career, including three National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards and an award at the Venice Film Festival. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan awards for his contributions to Indian cinema.
Former chairperson of Press Council of India and a retired Supreme Court Justice Markandey Katju in an interview with NewMax said: “Cow is like horse, dog or any other animal. Worshipping cow is stupidity.” He rejected the argument that cow gives milk, adding that people drink goat, buffalo and camel milk but these animals are not being worshipped. Responding to a question about watering of parks in Noida to disrupt Juma prayers he said article 19 of the Constitution gives full rights for a gathering of any community peacefully without arms; hence it is unconstitutional to stop Friday prayers. He added that RSS is organizing shakhaas in parks, then why Muslims should be denied their right. He predicted worst times ahead, as BJP could stir communal riots to get support and votes of the Hindu extremists and fanatics of RSS and other extremist outfits.
Minorities in India are getting a raw deal. The Sikh community could hardly forget what happened to them in 1984 at Golden Temple. Likewise, the Indian Muslims have more or less the same tales of sorrow and miseries, most of which are still unheard. The destruction of Babri Mosque was a major blow to the religious feelings of the Muslim community in India, which also increased sense of insecurity among them. In Gujarat, the Hindu fanatics had carried out a planned massacre resulting in the killings of more than 3000 Muslims, when most of whom were burnt alive. Indian Christians met the same fate in Orissa where extremists on more than one occasion burnt their churches and houses. Is it not indicative of the growing threat of ‘Hindu talibanisation’ the Indian society is confronted with today because BJP is promoting Hindutva ideology?
