Trump is notorious for somersaults and for changing colours like the proverbial chameleon. His think-tanks must have told him not to give a wide berth to Islamabad in his dealings on Afghan issue and that might be the precise reason why all of a sudden he now wants to take Pakistan into the loop over Afghanistan issue. Pakistan should, however, move with extra caution as whatever Washington says should be taken with a pinch of salt because in the past we have been taken to the cleaners by the Americans not once but many times.
It is a pity that a strong pro- American lobby has always existed in this country which has never allowed Pakistan to have an independent foreign policy. During the 1965 Indo-Pak war Air Marshal Asghar Khan was sent to China by Ayub Khan. The then Chinese premier told him that the entire Air force fighter planes of China were at the disposal of Pakistan but also smiling told Asghar Khan that he knew his president cannot take the risk of annoying America by accepting his offer. Air Marshal Asghar Khan wrote in his book that when on return he informed the president of that offer he turned a deaf ear to him thereby confirming the apprehension of the Chinese premier.
Trump was, however, quiet right when he said that it was Moscow’s military intervention in Afghanistan that resulted in the shrinking of size of Soviet Union to Russia only. Moscow’s unwarranted unwarranted military interference in the affairs of some Warsaw countries and Afghanistan cost it dearly in terms of men and money.
The Chinese leadership, on the contrary, very farsightedly refused to get provoked into any military adventure despite Washington’s so many attempts to provoke it and instead reserved all their energies for economic development and scientific advancement with the result that today China is a power to be reckoned with.
Islamabad would be well advised if instead falling into the laps of America once again, it treads a very cautious foreign policy and beware of the evil designs which the triumvirate of Washington, New Delhi and Tel Aviv nurse against us.
