More people get killed in this country due to obesity and traffic accidents than physical or mental diseases.
Let us have a cursory glance over traffic affairs of this country. Most of the Vehicles plying on the roads are not road worthy and it seems as if they are not subjected to the regular fitness test as prescribed under the law with the result that incidents like tyre bursting and loosening of tie rods occur frequently causing human loss in the process
There is no check over the use of mobile phones by the drivers while driving. Some of them have even installed pocket sized TV sets near the windscreen of their vehicles. Obviously, these distractions cause loss of concentration on the part of the drivers while driving resulting in fatal road accidents. What is parliament for? Why has it not yet realised how essential it is to legislate law banning use of Mobile sets while driving and prescribing heavy fines on those violating this law?
It has been observed that the traffic police has not been pulling its weight in coming down with a heavy hand on those who are involved in overspeeding nor is there any system in place to take blood sample of the drivers accused of overspeeding in order to ascertain whether or not they are under the spell of alcohol while driving.
The traffic police also looks the other way when teenagers under the age of 18 belonging to the elite class drive vehicles.
The way most of the drivers ply vehicles gives the impression as if nobody has taught them the basics of traffic rules and regulations before issuing them driving licence
Unless the entire traffic system is overhauled from top to bottom it would be difficult to contain the grown and growing incidence of killings on the roads of the country due to traffic accidents.
