A cacophony of drivel mars the political stage of the country. One hears threats from some political quarters that attempt to annul 18th amendment won’t be allowed in the constitution. Some politicians, likewise, threaten to take to the streets in case there was any attempt to foist the presidential form of government on the country.
What is ironical is that the common man is least interested in whatever form the country is run. He is interested only in such a system of governance in which his self-respect is not injured , his honour is safe, which provides him a square meal in the day in a dignified manner, which takes care of his medical requirement and in which he has a room of his own. What good is a system where the have-nots live in a state of perpetual squalor and in which they don’t know where their next meal would come from?
Experience of the hindsight tells us that we have yet to evolve a constitution which is in consonance with the sentiments and aspirations of the common man. Are the have-nots of this country fated that they should always be ruled by Khans, Chaudris, Sardars and vedaras?
Can’t the country be devolved at the Divisional level so that the administrative and financial powers are decentralised at the grass root levels in the true sense of the word? Our present politicians are averse to this idea because they fear that in that case power would slip off from their hands . It is precisely for this reason that while they harp on the tune of provincial autonomy they shudder at the very thought of decentralising and devolving power further at the district or Tehsil level.
