Let us hope that the government would not go back on its word and wouldn’t release hefty amounts to parliamentarians every year for carrying out so-called developmental works in their political constituencies. They are certainly not contractors of the PWD. The electorate send them to the assembles for one purpose only:legislation. They had better not deviate from this primary and the only duty of theirs. There is going to be political pressure on the PM in this connection from parliamentarians on this score as the only attraction for their vying to become assembly members was this money worth many crore of rupees but he shouldn’t take any U-turn at least on this issue. The parliamentarians , of course, can identify the areas in their political constituencies where there is need of urgent developmental works and that is that. It is for the Planning Commission then to carry out their feasibility study before their execution on the ground.
The common man wasn’t amused by the statement of the defence minister that the PM would be visiting NA once or twice during its sessions. He remembers his oft-repeated promise that like the British premier he would make himself available in the NA once a week for answering the questions personally of the members of the NA on the floor of the House. Why this volte face on his part?
In a parliamentary democracy the PM derives his political strength from his cooperation with the members of the NA. Winning their heart and soul is an art worth learning and then practising it too. He shouldn’t give a wide berth to the NA like his predecessor as it might damage his political equation with it. Mian Nawaz Sharif used to show his face to the NA once in a blue moon and that too when he was in some political trouble. The PM had better avoid treating the members of the NA like the Shudars or Dalits.
