The remarks of the captain of Pakistani cricket team against a black Proteas cricketer recently were racist and certainly unwarranted. It didn’t behove skipper of the guest team to lose temper on a player of the host team and indulge in the use of highly offensive words. Though members of the team of the host country have forgiven him after he tendered an apology but the PCB and the ICC should not pardon him. He shouldn’t go unpunished. He should be banned from playing for a limited period or fined for his highly unbecoming attitude which has made his nation hang its head in shame so that a strong signal goes to the present and would-be members of our cricket teams in future.
A Sportsman is a sort of country’s ambassador whenever he visits abroad. He can win the heart and soul of the people of the country which he plays in by his friendly demeanour and sportsman’s spirit. One is not sure whether the PCB officials while giving them a pep talk before their departure abroad brief them properly about the DOs and DON’TS during the course of their tours abroad. There is certainly something amiss in their pre-visit training, otherwise, Sarfaraz Ahmad would not have uttered highly objectionable words to the South African player in his moments of weakness. His reaction was all the more objectionable because he was heading the Pakistan cricket team. The skipper is supposed to demonstrate such an attitude over which no finger could be raised. He is supposed to be the role model for his team members. We have before us example of Abdul Hafeez Kardar , the first captain of the Pakistan’s cricket team whose conduct during umpteen foreign tours of Pakistan cricket team never can under any reproach.
