Death laid its icy cold hands on Naheed Iskandar Mirza, wife of the former president of Pakistan Major General Iskandar Mirza last Friday . She has been living in recluse in London since 1958 after Ayub Khan overthrew the government of her spouse and forced him to live a life of exile in Britain’s capital. Iskandar Mirza had to work as an assistant manager in a London hotel for a quite a long time as he didn’t have enough money to go round.
Naheed was an Iranian by descent. She was distantly related to Nusrat Bhutto wife of ZA Bhutto and it is believed that she was instrumental in introducing him to her husband . Bhutto used to visit Governor General house when Iskandar Mirza occupied that office for playing snooker with him. It also said that Iskandar Mirza was instrumental in getting him into the cabinet of Ayub Khan. The rest, as they say, is history.
Roohi Bano the famous TV artist also kicked the bucket on the same day that Naheed joined the great majority. She died in penury away from her country in Instanbul and her heirs didn’t have enough money to bear the expenses to bring her dead body for burial to Lahore. What a pathetic and tragic end to this great actress who in her heyday dominated PTV dramas . Owing to the death of her son she had lost her mental balance from which she, in fact, never recovered. Fountain House Lahore was her home for a long time where mentally deranged are kept and treated but it seems that the pain which she was carrying in her soul was not treatable. She had seen better times and she didn’t deserve the type of end that befell her.
