It is a pity that our political parties don’t do necessary homework while they are sitting in the opposition . Instead of tasking their think-tanks to carry out research work on the public issues and come out with concrete suggestions for solving them they waste most of their time in glib talk against their political adversaries sitting on the Treasury as well as on the opposition benches in parliament with the result that when they come into power they draw a blank face and have to form task forces for tackling people’s problems thus causing a lot of delay in redressing public issues.
Opposition just for the sake of opposition is counter-productive. If opposition parties in their own wisdom consider any policy or developmental project of the ruling party defective in any respect they should not merely point out it but also suggest its alternative in black and white and place it in the public forums for an open public debate on it.
One feels sick to the back teeth to note that there are many politicians in the country who claim themselves to be the champions of democracy but they run their political parties with an iron hand and don’t tolerate any person within their party who holds views contrary to theirs. Isn’t it a fact that barring an odd case, where a fool-proof system of intra-party elections has been put in place, a majority of political parties are being run like a personal fiefdom. The leaders of these parties ensure that after their number is up their son, daughter, brother or any other next of kin should step into their shoes. Is there no body outside their family who is capable enough to run the show after they kick the bucket? The common man has started asking this question.
