ISLAMABAD, February 29: Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has clinched Oscar Award for the second time for her best short documentary “A girl in the river” featuring honor killing.
The award ceremony was held in Los Angeles.
The documentary “A girl in the river” was joint production of Obaid-Chinoy Films and Home Box Office (HBO).
The documentary revolves round the life of an 18 year girls who escapes killing in the name of honor.
Chinoy won first Oscar Award in 2012 and won laurels for Pakistan on his documentary “Saving face”.
“I am delighted that my documentary has carved a niche among the nominees for Oscar award. This film and its message is of paramount significance for me. This is another opportunity for Pakistan to recognize honor killing as issue and launch immediate measures to address it because killing in the name of honor is not honor”, she said after she received the award.
She said that “we should communicate this strong message to the world that this heinous crime was not part of culture or religion”.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has congratulated Chinoy for winning the Oscar Award for the second time.
” There is no room for killing in the name of honor in Islam. We are enacting necessary legislation for prevention of such practice.
Obaid-Chinoy who is working for the safety and protection for women is a pride for Pakistani women,” the prime minister said in his congratulatory message.
The premier remarked that women like Obaid-Chinoy were playing eminent role for the promotion of civilization and culture in the world.
Information Minister Pervez Rashid and Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi also congratulated Chinoy for clinching the award for the second time.-Online
