Before the concept of ‘pinch hitting from the word go’ became the order of the day, in ‘limited overs cricket’, Imran Khan’s formula of not losing early wickets and batting steadily upto 30 overs with minimum loss of wickets (even at the rate of 3.5 runs per over) was regarded as the most productive.
In the 1992 world cup this formula worked. There was no ‘pinch-hitting’ in the early overs. There was emphasis on consolidation. Then the later part of the innings was dominated by ‘STROKEPLAY’. Who will forget Inzamamul Haque’s superb batting in this respect in the semi-final against New Zealand? And who will forget the consolidation work, of Imran Khan himself and Javed Miandad in the final against England?
What I am trying to say is that Imran Khan as a skipper doesn’t have the temperament of ‘ready-to-kill’ fast bowler. As a skipper Imran Khan is a different person—a different mindset.
As Pakistan’s Prime Minister he has yet to unfold himself. I personally know, IK’s best decisions are owed to his GUT SENSE.
Once he starts using his GUT SENSE more often, he will surely be seen as a match-winner.
