A whole-time interior minister is needed. The PM is a very busy man and the interior ministry has always had a very heavy agenda which cannot be left at the mercy of a deputy interior minister who is not experienced enough to run the show. Nawaz Sharif kept the portfolio of foreign minister with himself refusing to appoint a fully fledged Foreign minister for almost four years as a result of which Pakistan had had to pay a very price for it as he couldn’t do full justice to it because of his pre-occupation as PM. Interior ministry, like the foreign ministry too cannot be treated in a cavalier manner.
First thing first. The common man wants peace and tranquility on the country’s roads and streets. The interior ministry , to start with, has to rid the country of heavy weaponry in the first instance if it wants to contain the menace of terrorism in the country. Unless that was done, no effort to bring normalcy in the law and order of the country can succeed. Operation clean -up against heavy weaponry should be the order of the day.
The performance of the finance minister , hitherto, has also been disappointing , to say the least. His transfer at this stage, however, when the budget session is on the anvil and the negotiations with the IMF are in the final stage would not be desirable. Frankly speaking , there hasn’t been much difference between him and his predecessor-in-office. Insiders say the foreign minister was eying the slot of chief minister Panjab . He is known to be a very ambitious man. Some of his detractors, like Jehangir Tareen, it is said, have been poisoning the mind of the PM by propagating that he is allegedly trying to pull the rug from under his feet for occupying that slot for himself. Even if there is an iota of truth in this allegation, it isn’t good for the health of the PTI.
