Can anyone deny that wives are maltreated by their husbands in this country more often than not?Isn’t it common that they are also physically tortured and beaten up in our society? What is the big deal if a law has been now passed giving them adequate protection from the excesses of their errant spouses? Why should such a hullabaloo be raised over it by some sections of society?Gone are the days when women folk could easily be exploited physically, emotionally as well as economically. Education, democracy and awareness about their rights have made the fair sex conscious of their rights. If those of us who are raising a rumpus in the matter start looking at the Panjab Assembly’s bill in the matter as a father or as a brother of their daughters and sisters respectively, instead of thinking in terms of husbands only would we be not in a better frame of mind to understand the logic behind this law?One should ask oneself one simple question?Wouldn’t we go through mental torture also if our daughters or sisters are subjected to periodic physical assault by their spouses against which the new law passed by the Panjab Assembly provides them due protection? The PPP should openly support it because it never tires of championing the rights of the women folk of this country.
It is unjust and downright unethical and even criminal to differentiate between a daughter and a son. Neither any religion nor any law allow it. To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. There would have been no need of the impugned law had the women been not subjected to ill-treatment by men in this country. Those men of the cloth who have raised the banner of rebellion are requested to have a heart. We had better man the barricades against all those who want to treat the women folk of this country as chattel.
