Was there any point in initiating a useless debate in the country at this juncture whether or not the Ruet Hilal Committee should be disbanded and instead a lunar calendar for the next ten years be prepared by the experts in meteorology ?Are rivers of honey and milk are flowing in this country and we have no other problem to discuss?Isn’t it true that the Iraqis were also engaged in debate over more less similar issues when Halagu Khan was knocking at the door of Baghdad? The manner in which he beat the hell out of the Iraqis then should be an eye-opener for us.
The sighting of moon, particularly , of the holy month of Ramadan in this country has always been a bone of contention among some religious sects in this country who are so much at daggers drawn with one other that the meat of one is the poison of the other. One is at loss to understand why there should be any opposition in the country from some persons to the proposal that a committee of experts in meteorology should evolve a Lunar Calendar for at least next ten years so that the people of this country could get rid of the dispute over sighting of Ramadan moon every year? After all , don’t we follow blindly what the scientists say about the timings of the lunar and solar eclipses?
Time was when there wasn’t any central Ruet Hilal committee in the country at all. Every district used to have a district Ruet Hilal committee which was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of the district and which comprised religious bigwigs of the district belonging to all religious sects. Their decision as to the sighting of Ramadan and Eid moon was final and that was that. Now when science and technology has progressed by leaps and bounds what is the harm if we take advantage of it in the matter of sighting of moon for religious purpose?
