The tax amnesty schemes haven’t helped our economy to find its feet in the past and one wonders if the new Amnesty scheme on the anvil is going to pay dividends should the present government also plump for it.Isn’t it a roundabout way of admission of failure by the government to recover taxes from the filthy rich?Doesn’t it mean that the feet of the state are made of clay? What is the state and its functionaries for ?Isn’t it their duty to recover taxes from those whose income is taxable? If the state starts begging the ultra-rich, who have come into big money through dubious means, instead of using stick against them then God be with it!
Isn’t it necessary on the part of Barrister Shahzad Akbar ,head of the Recovery Unit set up by the government a couple of months back to make the hoarders of black money who have made property abroad cough it out, to appear before parliament and explain at length as to the reasons of delay in the matter? He had declared three months back that his Recovery Unit had located 10000 properties abroad built by some Pakistanis through undeclared ill-gotten money. He must brief parliament about the steps taken by his Unit hitherto against the owners of these properties.
The common man is feeling disgusted by the day over the delay on the part of the government to document national economy.Every Pakistani knows inside out those filthy rich who live in palatial houses, who drive in limousines ,who fly to the US,Middle East and England many times a year in business or first class, whose children study in local or international educational institutions whose monthly tuition fee runs into lacs of rupees.Everything belonging to them is documented. Why are they not being taxed according to the wealth they own?
