The new Chairman FBR says that the documentation of the country’s economy is a must. His predecessors had also said the same thing when they were in the saddle but nobody was, however, able to translate it into reality. Whether the present Chairman FBR also go their way or would he be courageous enough to give a practical shape to his intention?Very soon it is going to become clear.
The elite, the dirty rich, have spread their tentacles far and wide. They have a political nuisance value. Every government worth its salt avoided bringing them under the tax net for the fear of a strong backlash from their unions. One wonders whether the present political set up which is in power with a razor -thin majority would be able to stir up hornet’s nest by documenting their real income! What to speak of them, no government in this country, past or present, has ever tried to bring under tax net even those persons whose income already stands documented. They include those who live in palatial and spacious houses spread over many kanals, who pay monthly lakhs of rupees as tuition fee of their children who study in posh private educational institutions inside the country or abroad, who sport luxury cars and who spend crores of rupees on their pleasure trips abroad every year.
Countries are run with money and money doesn’t grow on trees. It has to be generated through taxes. It needs to recovered from very citizen according to his income and unless income of very person s documented it is simply impossible to raise the revenue needed for running the country.
