The governor Panjab Chaudri Sarwar wears his heart on his sleeve. Speaking in a public function the other day he said the rich Brits become poor after joining the politics, whereas, the poor Pakistanis become rich on joining politics.
It goes without saying that of all the professions that are practised in this country, politics, perhaps, is the most profitable profession. The more one makes investment in it the more profit one gets on entering the citadel of power. Gone are the days when politics meant serving the common man.
Liaqat Ali Khan, Suharwardy, Nur ul Amin, Fareed Ahmad, Mufti Mahmood, Maulana Bhashani, Abdul Wali Khan, Abdul Samad Achakzai, Maulvi Fazle Haq, Chaudri Mohammad Ali, Maulana Maudoodi, Abdul Qaiyum Khan, Khawaja Nazimuddin, Monim Khan , Sardar Abdul Rab Nisthar, Ghaus Baksh Bizenjo, and many other eminent politicians of their ilk, were all great politicians in their own right but they never exploited their position to make money and fill their personal coffers.
Most of the leaders belonging to the crop of politicians that came to power after 1980 used the platform of politics for increasing their personal wealth. Those leaders who ruled the roost for most of the time between between 1980 and 2018 made the hay as the sun shone . They made money in a very sophisticated manner and those of them who have been nabbed in mega corruption cases have now hired the legal services of big names in the lawyers’ community who charge exorbitant amount as fee in their effort to escape jail term.
