Unless three basic concepts are acted upon, all talk about the creation of a social welfare state would be no more than a glib talk. Equality, liberty and fraternity are sine qua non if we are to establish a truly egalitarian society. We are nowhere near to these three basic pillars without which the foundation of a classless society cannot be laid.
It is fashionable on the part of the rulers of this country as well those who aspire to enter citadel of power that they make lofty claims about their intention of bridging the gap between the haves and have-nots, ensuring justice among all sections of society and equitable distribution of wealth also among them without realising that how come it is possible without first introducing this concept in the country, hook, line and sinker?
Ground realities speak to the contrary. How can they dispense justice in the society where on one side big landlords exist and on the other there are peasants galore who depend on their basic needs of life on these landlords whose land they plough in order to earn a handful of wheat essential for keeping their body and soul together?How can the requirements of justice and FairPlay be met in a society where on one end is the mill owner whose wealth knows no bounds and on the other is the poor labourer who has to work overtime to earn a few loaves of bread for himself and his family member and whose employment depends on his pleasure?They are simply no match to each other.
The states which are social welfare states in the true sense of the word have first put into effect, in letter and spirit, the concept of equality , liberty and fraternity in their society for ushering in a truly classless society.
