I FEEL LIKE REPEATING THIS EARLIER COLUMN IN THE PRESENT SCENARIO
As the ancient wisdom goes, the friend of your friend is your friend, the enemy of your friend is your enemy, the friend of your enemy too is your enemy, and the enemy of your enemy is your friend.
This equation is true in the lives of the individuals and the families as well as of the nations and the countries.
If foreign relations are based and built on this maxim, these will stand an excellent chance of surviving in even the worst of times.
It is time to evaluate our relations or relationship with the U.S in the light of the above-stated ancient wisdom.
Do we have any common friends, enemies or objectives that may be relied upon for building a rational logical natural and lasting bond? There is a school of thought in our country that finds common objectives in the U.S and Pakistan. This school of thought is comprised either of those, with the vested interests in the U.S and the West, or of those who, for their survival, are dependent on the funds, the U.S and her allies generously throw into the NGOs and the causes of various kinds—all sounding noble to the ears.
The most noticeable objective that has surfaced in the U.S scheme of things since the erosion of the Soviet power and communism is the containment of Islam. For this the U.S has quite successfully invented the ‘ bogy’ of the Islamic extremism. Who can deny the historical fact that this ‘evil’ of the ‘ Islamic extremism’ was the most ‘venerated’ ally of the Free World when the name of the enemy was the Soviet Union (The Evil Empire as Reagan put it)? Both Osama and the AlQaeda were the creations of the CIA. I am prepared to believe that the architects of the U.S strategic policies and goals had it in their minds that these ‘convenient’ allies against the Soviet Union would later be used against Islam itself.
How can Pakistan share the U.S objective of containing Islam? This is a nation of 180 millions, 98% of whom are ‘fundamentally’ Muslims.
How can this nation plunge the U.S-made dagger into its own body?
The fact is that for years and years—decades and decades Pakistan has allowed herself to be used by her American masters for causes that probably never had any roots in her own national interests.
And now the hour of realization and awakening has come. For this let us express our gratitude to all those in Washington who are trying today to outdo one another in Pakistan-bashing.
