Mian Nawaz Sharif has excellent reasons to carry a lifelong grudge against General (R) Pervez Musharraf. It is not just the issue of the article 6 that makes Mian Sahib feel like burning with smouldering rage. We have a ‘rich’ history of having ‘raped’ practically every article of the constitution.
And not a single person associated in any capacity with the ‘responsibility’ of governance can make a convincing pretense towards being innocent in this respect. Whereas the violation of the article 6 basically affects only a particular government’s right to rule, some of the articles that have been violated with impunity, relate to the very ethos of this nation.
The real reason for Mian Sahib to harbour nothing but disdain for the retired General is that he made Mian Sahib look like a real dunce on the 12th of October 1999. Hadn’t Mian Sahib himself in his fully functioning senses, selected General Pervez Musharraf in preference over others? Hadn’t he thought at the time of this fateful selection that this eat-drink-and-be-merry type of a General (with no indigenous roots) wouldn’t ever pose any threat to his power?
I am sure Mian Nawaz Sharif should have told himself a thousand times in the last twelve years. “What a great fool had I been in October 1998 !”
In an ironical way, the state of mind of ZAB in the post -5th of July 1977-scenario shouldn’t have been any different. In his best ‘wisdom’ ZAB had, only a few months earlier, selected as General Tikka Khan’s successor, a man whom he regarded not any better than a clown——!
It is never a good feeling to realize that one has put one’s own signatures on one’s doom.
