Cricket today is not the cricket it once was. It has come a long way from the era of test cricket which is believed to be the only real cricket by many of its stalwarts who consider the ODIs and Twenty20 as mere aberration of it. The cricket playing countries of the world which can be counted on fingers is in the grip of cricket fever since last fortnight and it would subside only once the 2019 World Cup cricket tournament now underway in England and Wales comes to its conclusion after a couple of days.
Thanks to the media coverage galore more and more countries are taking a fancy to it. Who could have thought that Afghanistan too would once make it to the world cricket cup tournament ?Before long the Afghan boys would also become serious contenders for this coveted Cup’s title. Mark my words.
Like football, the world cricket cup tournament is being played with regularity after every four years. The introduction of information technology has improved the standard of umpiring. Time was when wrong LBW decisions were given intentionally or unintentionally by the umpires . Since camera doesn’t tell a lie now the wrong LBW decisions are immediately righted by the camera within minutes to the entire satisfaction of both the bowler and the batsman.
On the flip side when one looks at the fate of hockey and squash in this country one feels disturbed and disappointed. We are now neither here nor there in these two sports, whereas, once no body could hold a candle to us in them and we dominated the world in them for years together.
