Lollywood heavyweights Syed Noor and Moammar Rana were certainly not pleased with Oscar winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as Noor accused her of copying the name and idea of A Girl In The River: The Price of Forgiveness from an upcoming movie of his.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had received adulation and praises for her latest Oscar win for the documentary A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness. However, there were some quarters within Pakistan who were not entirely happy with the film and criticised the filmmaker for highlighting a menace for Pakistan on the international stage. Syed Noor apparently is also one of Sharmeen’s critics but for a different reason; the Lollywood director accused Chinoy of copying the idea and name of a movie of his from 2011!
According to the Choorian director, Sharmeen not only stole the script of his movie Price of Honour from 2011 but also the name. He said he would not pursue the matter legally against Chinoy but stated that he was saddened by the fact that he had not been accredited. Moammar Rana also spoke on the issue and criticised Chinoy for bringing a bad name to Pakistan and challenged her to make a documentary on the afflictions of victims of drone attacks.
Syed Noor’s Price of Honour was released in 2011 and centered around a poor girl from a backward, conservative background who stood up against the status quo for her rights and education. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s movie was based on an 18 year-old girl who survived an attempt on her life because of honour killing.
Sharmeen retorts to Syed Noor’s plagiarism accusation
Oscar winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy reacted to news of Syed Noor’s accusations that she had stole the plot of his film and its title ‘The Price of Honour’ from 2011.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had been criticised by Pakistani film director Syed Noor yesterday when the latter had accused the former of plagiarising the script and title of his 2011 movie The Price of Honour.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy responded by tweeting an answer to a question posed by a follower on Twitter.
Syed Noor’s 2011 film The Price of Honour is based on an impoverished girl who battles the status quo in her quest to seek rights to education and equality. Sharmeen Obaid’s A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness is based on an 18 year-old girl who survived a near-fatal attack on her life, when she was shot in the face and thrown into the river. The attempt on her life had been made in the name of honour, since she had fallen in love with someone. On Monday, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had won the Oscar award for Best Documentary-Short Subject for A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness. Felicitations from all around the world as well as in Pakistan also poured in for the Saving Face filmmaker. Even Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had thanked Sharmeen on her Academy Award win in a tweet. We think Sharmeen Obaid has a strong point. How does one copy a documentary based on facts from a fiction film?
