Railway accidents are , lately on the increase. It has been observed that the railway minister fancies starting new trains on new routes, whereas, he should have , in the first instance, improved the standard of present railway services on the existing routes and had also restarted train services on the abandoned railway tracks like the one from Kohat to Manzai via Lakki and Tank, to quote an instance. That track could have been easily linked with Dera Ismail Khan and with Quetta via Tanai thus providing an alternative route to Balochistan from other provinces of the country, besides, providing cheap and comfortable transport facility to the people of the southern most districts of the KPK. There is certainly a need on the part of the Railwayauthorities to reset their priorIties right. It is extremely essential that its safety standards should be given top most attention also.
The Railway authorities should have concentrated more on running more and more goods trains also.
It is a pity that we have spoiled the excellent railway system which the Britishers had left us in 1947. In this respect our neighbouring country India did much better . Even the railway service of Iran is in a much better shape than ours.
Time was when the standard of food which was served in the dining car of the train was much better than what is being made available now. Needless to say that the railways is a poor man’s transport and it is unfortunate that it has remained neglected for a considerable long time in the country. Let us hope the present government would give it the importance which it truly deserves.
