Indications are that the tax amnesty scheme might be extended despite the government’s promise that it won’t be further extended meaning thereby it is meeting the same fate which similar earlier schemes announced by previous governments had met. The rulers are disappointed that the response to it was not to the extent they had hoped for. This is not a healthy sign at all. The government claims it has all the information of the undeclared property and it won’t hesitate confiscating it as well as sending its owners to jail for a seven years term if they failed to take benefit of this scheme but it is easier said than done.
Whether or not the rulers are serious to make the owners of this undeclared property cough out their ill-gotten money would be put to litmus test when the final deadline for declaring their property expires. The owners of this illegal property must go to the clinker for seven years in case of their failure to make public their property by the deadline , otherwise, the hollowness of the government in the matter would be exposed.
A substantial amount running into crore of rupees is being given since the days of Mohammad Khan Junejo to parliamentarians ostensibly for carrying out developmental works in their political constituencies. No body knows how much of it was actually spent on the so-called developmental activity. It is alleged that this largesse was often used in the past by the successive governments for purchasing their political loyalties. The detractors of this system have a point there when they say why the hell should this money be given to them as they are sent to parliament by the electorate for carrying our legislation ?They have nothing to do with developmental schemes which is the job of the local government The present rulers had more than once declared in their public meetings, when they were in the opposition, that on coming to power they will do away with this practice. The common man has the right to know why have they not made good on this promise of theirs up till now?
