Who says there is democracy in the present political system that is operative in this country?Dynastic politics grip the the country . It is the head of the political party that calls the shots. Nobody inside the party can dare to challenge his authority. The 18 th amendment has given him vast powers to throw out mavericks from his party. The absolute powers enjoyed by a party leader are reminiscent of the unfettered powers of the kings of yore. If there is any difference it is the difference of name only. It was the king then . It is the president or the chairman of political party now. Only the nomenclature has changed. Rest is the same. Barring an odd case here and there, where intra-party elections are held in the true sense of the word, worst type of dynastic politics exists almost in all the political parties, including the so- called religious parties. Leader of every political party worth its salt has made it a point to appoint his son, daughter, brother etc as his second in command so that in case his number is up, his successor should step into his shoes thus keeping the party leadership within his family.
The head of the political party also ensures to make nomination of his blue-eyed boys on all the key administrative positions in his party’s cadres and then wangle their selection on them. Can it be expected from a leader with such a mindset and mental framework that on coming to power he will conform to the democratic principles and practise democracy in the country? How can a political leader who doesn’t brook dissent within his political party would tolerate any opposition in the country?
