ISLAMABAD, July 9: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday withdrew its decision of deputing Pakistan Army inside all polling stations during elections of provincial assembly in the newly merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 20.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza in Islamabad in order to ensure transparency of the elections. The meeting was informed that army would only be deployed at the sensitive polling stations.
The meeting was attended by the provincial election commissioner, DROs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and security officials.
The meeting was also apprised that section 144 has also been lifted in these districts to remove the hurdles in running electoral campaign by the candidates and political parties.
The representatives of the provincial government assured the election commission of all out assistance.
They said the security is improving in the new districts that will facilitate holding of elections in a peaceful environment.-NNI
