Pseudo-intellectuals, self-styled analysts and some unconscionable elements of political parties have been critical of the military perhaps on the assumption that by weakening the military they will become stronger. Secondly, they wished to cover up their incompetence and failures to deliver to the masses. Some media men also continue with scathing criticism of what they call Miltablishment, and The Friday Times editor is not weaning off the habit of insinuating the military in one way or another. In its recent editorial, he stated: “Nawaz and Maryam Sharif urging the party to charge the citadels of the Miltablishment and Shahbaz Sharif stolidly in favour of appeasing it. Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman believed that he was robbed of precious electoral seats in KP because of a Miltablishment conspiracy to cut him down to size”. This is a blatant lie, as the people rejected them in the elections.
At the same time, he stated that Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif and many of their party stalwarts are not yet ready to face long imprisonments. All are still hoping for some sign of personal relief from the Miltablishment. The leader writer was disappointed over the lack of unity among the opposition parties. He wrote: “This was embarrassingly evident in the run-up to the All Parties Conference: Shahbaz proposing a Charter of Cooperation on the Economy with the PTI government and Maryam dismissing it as a veritable joke! In the APC, neither pressed his/her point and let the discussion meander to its logical non-end”. He referred to Maulana’s demand of en masse resignations from parliament and a “million-man” march on Islamabad to dislodge the PTI from power. He does not realize that PPP and PML-N leaders have stakes whereas Maulana has none; therefore major parties would not sign the death warrants of their parties.
There is no denying that the present economic mess has been the result of ineptness of the previous governments, and Imran Khan is trying to clear that mess. Of course, he had to take some unpopular decisions like increase in gas and electricity prices, and also to make rational value of rupee against dollar, which was manipulated by PML-N government. The good working relationship between military and PTI government is a sour in the eyes of detractors of military. From COAS Kayani and Army Chief Raheel Sharif were supportive of the governments of PPP’s government and PML-N government respectively, but leaders of those parties continued to denigrate the military through Memogate and Dawn Leaks scandals. COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa continued pursuing the same policy, but PML-N leaders have had the penchant to go into confrontation with the military chiefs and earlier with the presidents.
