Materialism has, unfortunately, affected the Fourth Estate also in the same manner as it has brought a bad name to many other national institutions of this country. There are black sheep in this noble profession also as they are present in other institutions which have a direct dealing with the common man like the judiciary the executive and parliament.
Every institution which is in a position to affect the public opinion has got an inherent strong nuisance value and if its members fail to resist the temptation of becoming billionaires overnight and start playing into the hands of vested interest they start blackballing all those political forces which are out in the field to right the wrongs committed by the various mafias that have virtually taken over every walk of life in this country.
Time was when persons like late Altaf Hussain, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Sibte Hasan, Mazhar Ali Khan, Hameed Nizami, Aziz Siddique, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi , A. T. Chaudri, Syed Askar Ali Shah, Mohammad Idrees, Hameed Sheikh, Ahmad Ali Khan, Naseem Hijazi, to mention a few, radiated light on the horizon of journalism. Persons like them are a rare commodity these days. They could not be purchased. Those who moved in the corridors of power respected and feared them at the same time. They were held in high esteem by the common man who knew that they always wrote the whole truth. Whatever they believed in, they let it be known to the people and the sitting government alike and never minced words. They weren’t rich persons by the modern standards but they had tremendous intellectual and moral wealth in their coffers and always looked with disdain at the ill-gotten money of the elite. From where should we bring persons like them now?
