It is a pity that many of us who are in a position to pay taxes don’t pay . It is also our misfortune that the rulers in the past never tried seriously to document the economy of the country so the government is not in a position to know who earns how much annually. Now when the present rulers have taken a step in this direction those traders who have been having an heyday are raising an hullabaloo over the issue. They have been very cunningly exploiting the anger of the common man over the present price hike in the essential commodities and confusing the actual issue. It is the government’s determination to get the economy of the country documented that is actually troubling the filthy rich traders.
A just and fair taxation system simply cannot be introduced in the country unless the tax levying authorities have correct statistics about the annual earnings of people belonging to various sections of life. It is common knowledge that many professionals like medics, lawyers, engineers ,to mention a few ,don’t give written receipts of the consultancy fee they charge from their clients, customers or patients thus leaving no trace ,whatever,of their actual annual income. Obviously, they don’t pay their income and wealth taxes to the government commensurate with their actual income. Why the hell should they kick up dust if the government now wants to know their actual income for bringing them under the tax net?
The economy of the country is on the ventilator. It badly needs oxygen of taxes if it is to survive. This is do-or-die situation. Unless every Pakistani decides to pay taxes according to his capacity and earning, the economy of the country cannot find its feet. It is as simple as that.
