This time it is a different Prime Minister and a different President. The amusement that Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani provided to George Bush will be hugely missing. As will be the ‘quiet wonder’ that characterized President Obama’s response to Mian Nawaz Sharif, reading out his ‘agenda of talks’ from his pocket.
It is Imran Khan this time, whose brain houses the agenda, and who will be more than a match to President Trump’s famous arrogance— (if Trump chooses to be so).
Imran Khan is quite capable of ‘outtalking’, ‘outsmarting’ and ‘out performing’ Trump. We all know Trump hates to be ‘trumped’. As I personally know Imran Khan rejoices in ‘trumping’ the men across the table with his smart and innocent simplicity. I once heard him talking to Thoman Friedman of New York Times on phone, and though I didn’t know what Friedman was saying, I was enjoying Imran’s ‘sweet rebuttals’.
Imran Khan is a more complex character than he likes himself to be perceived. Once I advised him to ‘tone down’ his language as he was then Prime Minister-in-waiting.
His reply was “Why in-waiting? And should a prime minister-in-waiting be a hypocrite?”
As I pen these words the much-awaited and ‘speculated’ meetings have yet to take place. Let us hope the two Strong Personalities choose to be soft.
