ISLAMABAD, August 1: Senate Chairperson Sadiq Sanjrani and Deputy Chairperson Saleem Mandviwalla survived no-confidence resolutions tabled against them on Thursday.
The oppositions no-confidence resolution against Sadiq Sanjrani failed to receive the 53 votes required for his removal. 50 votes were received in favour of the resolution with five votes being rejected.
At the start of the session, 64 senators had stood up in support of the motion to table the no-confidence resolution.
“I am thankful for both treasury and opposition benches for voting for me,” Sanjrani said to Geo News.
A similar resolution tabled against Saleem Mandviwalla by the government also failed as it received 32 votes.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan, a no-confidence motion had been submitted against the Senate chairperson, demanding he resigns from his post.
Opposition parties had nominated Hasil Bizenjo as their candidate for the post of Senate chairperson.
Special Assistant to PM on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said that the opposition tried to target Sadiq Sanjrani due to the malice they carry against PM Imran Khan.
“The arrow failed to hit its target,” said the Special Assistant to PM.
Awan added that the government is ready to move ahead despite the issues. -Agencies
