Once bitten twice shy. We shouldn’t be taken in by Washington’s latest friendly gestures. Everything which the Americans say need to be taken with a pinch of salt because they change colours like chameleon. Experience of hindsight tells us that unlike China’s consistency in friendship with us the Americans approach to us is badly marred by inconsistency with a lot of ups and downs. We should not forget also that the Americans are highly critical of the grown and growing influence of Beijing in Pakistan. There is no love lost between China and the US and if we tilted too much towards the Americans or got ourselves entangled in any matter which is detrimental to the Chinese interests in this region or elsewhere we might advertently or inadvertently evoke the ire of our Chinese friends which will be suicidal for us. Today the Yankees badly need us for furtherance of their political interests in this region, including, the safe exit of their troops from Afghanistan without losing face.
Granted that Washington has helped us financially to a great extent but in lieu of their largesse they have taken out of us a lot of work also. We have offered for them sacrifices both in men and matter which far exceed American’s munificence to us. So on that count it is even-Steven.
POSTSCRIPT :Babar Azam has a lot of potential as a batsman and he is quite young in his early twenties. It is premature to even think of making him captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Let him concentrate on his batting alone and not burden him with the captaincy.
