Pakistan Head Coach Mickey Arthur, during the cricket committee meeting on Friday, requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to extend his coaching contract by two years.
According to sources, Arthur has also suggested the PCB to appoint a local coach as his assistant, who can be groomed under him and can eventually take over when his contract expires.
The PCB is also considering taking the advise of senior cricketers with regards to Arthur’s future with the Pakistan team. This can work against Arthur as several Pakistan cricketers are not satisfied with his performance as the head coach. They believe that the 51-year-old is not very helpful during difficult times and refrains from accepting responsibility.
Sources further added that a former Pakistan cricketer, who is very close to the PCB officials, has recommended former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene as a replacement of Mickey Arthur.
The former cricketer believes that Pakistan should appoint a coach who has himself played all three formats of cricket. Jayawardene perfectly fits that bill but is currently coaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians and is unlikely to leave that job. Mickey Arthur is also among the candidates being considered for the England’s coaching role.
