That was the best which our Foreign office could do in the circumstances on the ongoing brutalities of the Indian forces on the hapless Kashmiris which it did on 16 th of August 2019 in the UN. The very fact that the Security council members have taken cognisance of the ground realities in Kashmir after almost half a century by not consenting to the plea of New Delhi that it was an internal matter of India was a big diplomatic achievement of Pakistan and our foreign minister deserves hosannas for articulating his country’s case in the media and among the security council members very effectively.
Well begun is half done. There is, however, no room for compacency. The foreign minister will have to be on his toes so that there is no let up in the follow up action on a very good start which he has taken in the matter which now will have to be taken to its logical conclusion. A massive diplomatic and media offensive is the need of the hour. There has to be a consistency now in our approach to the Kashmir issue. What the hell the parliamentary committee on Kashmir has been doing all through those years when a Maulana had been its head? Why on earth the former PM kept the important portfolio of the Foreign minister vacant for about four years? The indifference shown by the rulers of this country between 2007 and 2018 to Kashmir issue for about a decade has emboldened the Indian leadership, particularly, the present BJP rulers to take liberties in the matter. The Kashmir is one of the many issues inherited by Imran Khan. Let us hope he would prove himself equal to the task and unlike his predecessors adopt a consistent policy. Nobody expects any quick fix solution of this issue but a well thought out policy based on the collective wisdom , consultation and opinion of all necessary stakeholders on both sides of the control line can help ease the solution.
