Time was when the U.S. Marines had landed in Afghanistan to crush the Taliban.Time is when the circumstances have forced the U.S to request the Taliban for a safe passage for its marines as it wants to pull them out from Afghanistan. The ignominy which Washington had faced in North Vietnam back in the later half of 1960s is being faced by it again today in Afghanistan.Washington is to blame none but itself for taking military action in the geographical terrain ideally suited for guerrilla warfare in which both the Vietnamese and the Afghans are quite adept at.
The farce of presidential election in Afghanistan is over with both Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani claiming victory. No matter who is declared next president of Afghanistan he would be toothless. It is more likely that before the last American soldier leaves Afghanistan he too would vacate the presidential palace.
It is too early to predict what the new Taliban government would be like?It must learn from its past mistakes which should never be repeated this time round.Afghanistan is a heterogenous country where different tribal clans observing different religious faith live.Whosoever is in the saddle in Kabul would have to care for their sectarian and linguistic sensibilities and always take them on board before taking any decision affecting their daily life. The new rulers should rule in a democratic spirit.Regular consultation and coordination among all the political stakeholders would be sine qua non for smooth functioning of the government.
