Better late than never. The government decided to hold parleys with Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his partners in its attempt to defuse tension created in the country by the latter’s threat to lock down the federal capital. The Maulana must be laughing up his sleeves as he seems to have won the first round of his political game with the government. He will be talking from a position of strength with the government’s negotiating team now. In politics timings play a significant part. A good step or move made at a wrong time doesn’t pay as much as a step taken at the opportune time pays. Had the government opened dialogue with him the moment he indicated his intention to lock down Islamabad a couple of months back instead of waiting so long and coming to the negotiating table now the Maulana would not have been as strong politically as he has become today. It is feared that he won’t turn his back now without extracting maximum political concessions out of the government. Both Nawaz League and the PPP would go the whole hog in supporting the Maulana in his present agitation and would like to beat Imran Khan with his stick.
The tragedy and dilemma of Imran Khan is that he doesn’t have a team of good and experienced advisors. Many old politicians who have been close associates of leadership of either the PPP or Nawaz League or were close to Pervez Musharraf jumped on his bandwagon when he was about to enter the citadel of power . They were instrumental in the downfall of their former political bosses and they deserted their ship when it was drowning . When these fairweather friends weren’t loyal to their former almoners how can anybody say that they won’t play judas with Imran Khan. The next fortnight is going to be very crucial for the PTI government .
