Those politicians who are demanding that the fresh general elections should not be held under the supervision of the armed forces should have their heads examined because our armed forces, is, perhaps, the only institution left in the country which still is highly respected for its merit, discipline and non-partisan ship and which brooks no political interference in the discharge of its duties.
Time was when our civil service too was held in high esteem by the common man in the country because in its selection the public service commissions which comprised men of integrity had a big say. Over the years it was destroyed by the politician-rulers of this country by highly politicising it and submitting it to their sweet will by withdrawing the constitutional cover that was available to it in matter of its service. The ground reality now is that the civil servants act as hired assassins for the ruling party and that is the precise reason why every time there are general elections in the country the first demand that comes from the public quarters is that they be held under the umbrella of the armed forces. The judiciary too, like the armed forces, inspire public confidence but since it has to act as appellate courts in election petitions it is always better not to involve it in the actual conduct of the polls because it would be listening to appeals made in the election petitions.
The politicians who demand that the armed forces should have nothing to do with elections actually want to have a free hand in gerrymandering them and this demand of theirs certainly deserves no consideration, whatever.
