Time was when Italy was an haunting place for the corrupt kings, presidents or prime ministers to take refuge in and spend the rest of their lives when they were shown the door by the forces ousting them from power due to their corrupt practices. One remembers King Farooq of Egypt taking refuge there after he was ousted from power by the Army. King Zahir Shah of Afghanistan too preferred to stay there after his cousin Sardar Daud deposed him from the kingship of Afghanistan. Besides, England, France and Spain had also remained the favourite places of the filthy rich former rulers to take political asylum in and save themselves from the wrath of their people and enjoy their life from their economic plunder of their country. No longer is this case now. The Arab Emirates have now become their favourite place whenever they flee their country or were driven out of power. Emirates have upstaged all other countries in the matter.
The Emirates have all the luxuries of life one can think about. No questions are asked if one wants to invest as much money as one wants to in any business there unlike Britain where it has become exceedingly difficult now to open a new bank account. Small wonder all those persons who have come into big money through dubious manner prefer to shift to the Emirates for saving their ill- gotten money.
Many Pakistanis living beyond their known means and income have settled in the Emirates. In Pakistan they could never have justified their wealth and give its money trail. Dubai. Abu Dhabi, Doha and Sharjah today is a paradise for them.
