America’s hostility to the CPEC is now coming into the open day by day. The recent statement of a senior official in the U. S. State Department that this project is not going to be beneficial to Pakistan is a case in point. The reaction of the government against the said statement is understandable. Washington had thought that after the dismemberment of the Soviet Union there would be a unipolar world where only the U. S. would rule the roost . That was not to be. It never crossed its mind that China would emerge as a strong economy and military power upstaging the U. S. in the world.
As far as Pak-China friendship is concerned it has stood the test of time. Let us admit that one cannot quote a single incident since the creation of this country up till now when China had ever let us down. It has always stood by us through thick and thin unlike America which has deserted us so many times when we were in trouble despite the fact that we incurred the wrath of Moscow in the past by going out of the way in supporting Washington in a number of cases against the then Soviet Union. Granted that China too might have been standing behind us due to political experiences but that should matter the least to us because we are concerned with its friendship in which we have never found him wanting.
The American think-thanks and the CIA would try their utmost to sow the seeds of misunderstanding and discord in the mind of the Chinese against Pakistan in order to create a rift between Islamabad and Beijing. Our Foreign Office must remain alert and alive to the situation and pre-empt any move in such a direction by our enemy countries.
