In any military combat the winning forces seldom yearn for ceasefire. The Taliban had once again refused to hold parleys unless the foreign forces first pull out from Afghanistan and their arrested leaders are set free . One is reminded here of the historic saying of late Mullah Omar that, no doubt, the Americans must be having a lot of wrist watches with them but we have a lot of time available with us.
One is not sure as to what is the US up to?Does it really want peace in Afghanistan? There are many who suspect that the Yankees do not want a total and complete solution of problems that beset this region in the hope that one day they might exploit them in furtherance of their political designs. In the war of the Afghan freedom fighters against the Soviet occupying forces back in 1980 the Americans had won the hearts of all and sundry in Afghanistan. There was a tremendous goodwill for them throughout the length and breadth of Afghanistan. The Americans could have cashed in on that goodwill by undertaking a massive developmental programme in Afghanistan on the pattern of the Marshal Plan which they had executed for the rehabilitation of Europe. They lost that opportunity by looking the other way once Afghanistan was freed of Soviet occupation.
The present ground reality in Afghanistan is that Washington is utterly disappointed over the performance of the Afghan National Army which has yet to find its feet. Its soldiers are deserting to the Taliban camp along with their weaponry and they cannot fight them unless they are supported by the American marines. Presidential elections in the US are round the corner. It is widely believed that Obama is not going to take any major decision about Afghanistan during the fag end of his presidency, meaning thereby that the fate of Afghanistan is going to hang in balance till early next year when the new president would become tenant of the White House.
