To err is human. All laws cannot be infallible. They are, after all, creation of human beings. If the draftsmen of the Army Act had erred somewhere amendments be made by all means but all the stake holders must be consulted without any prejudice so that no misunderstanding is created by this parliamentary exercise.
Let us admit that our armed forces are the best in the world. In terms of selection , training and promotions, the armed forces of other Muslim countries pale in comparison to them. There are instances galore where the next of kin of highly placed Army, Air force and Navy officers could not make it in the ISSB exams meaning thereby that merit and merit alone matters in their selection procedure and then in their subsequent career as military officers. The Hallmark of our armed forces is that though they are drawn from every part of the country they consider themselves as Pakistani first and all other considerations come later on. The chain of command of our armed forces is excellent.
It is a pity that in this country barring the Armed forces and , to some extent, the judiciary, all other state institutions have been highly politicised.
Rumour has it that an attempt is being made to interfere with the promotion and posting criterion of some other state institutions also. Should that happen it would tantamount to creating a dent in the solidarity of the country. It is now the duty of the electorate to elect the best people as parliamentarians who then in turn legislate common man_friendly laws and then also ensure their implementation in letter and spirit. No body in his right mind is in favour of politicisation of the state organs.
